When you’re just under 5’4, you can be considered petite. But usually those who are petite have less of a hard time finding outfits that fit in all the right places. Sure, you may have to get some jeans or pants altered, but it comes with the territory. I’m not saying it’s easy for everyone who is petite can find the most perfect style or how to shop effectively for if you are shorter, but that’s okay! We’re here to help. We have years of experience, and we want to share that with you. We have put together must-have clothing essentials that you can try out.
- Straight Leg Jeans
If you’re the type with a longer torso and shorter legs, we recommend starting with longish, high waisted straight leg jeans or skinny jeans, with a shorter top; either tucked in sweater or crop top.
Jeans that sit right below your ankle will give you the illusion of longer legs which makes you look a bit taller than you normally would. We’d recommend going for straight legs because they’re not too wide or too skinny. Too wide can make you look shorter and too skinny can make you look too lanky. We also don’t recommend distressed jeans, because the cuts and holes cut off the illusion of longer legs. A solid pair of jeans will have a continuous look to it which will look better and not as cut off.
- Long Coats
Since it’s Fall, you’re probably looking for a good coat. Right now, long trench coats are what’s in and they’re perfect for petite women. The open line of the coat that goes all the way from the top down gives you the illusion of more height. Typically trench coats are a thinner material and won’t look bulky or too big, because if you have a coat that is too big, it won’t flatter you.
Longer coats tend to look better and flatter the contours of your body without looking very bulky.
- Mini & Midi Skirts
If you’re looking for an outfit for a night out and we’d recommend going for a cute Mini or Midi skirt. This will flatter your legs and you won’t look as short or overpowered if you go for a long dress or skirt. A mini skirt shows enough skin to where you can show off your body because of the short hemline. A must-have in a petite girl’s wardrobe.
- Short Heeled Mules
These are a must-have if you’re a petite girl. Kitten style heels are both chic and elegant and can be matched with almost anything. Did I mention they are super comfortable too? When you’re petite, flats may not be your best friend. If you want to look a little taller than always opt for a heel, whether they are heeled booties, strappy high heels or even these kitten mules.
- Slightly Oversized Sweaters
I know you might be thinking, oversized sweaters for a petite figure? No way…But hear us out. A slightly oversized sweater can look awkward on a smaller person, BUT if it you style it properly it doesn’t have to be. You should have a sweater that it’s big enough you can tuck it in, this way it won’t be too bulky, and it’s sweater season anyways, so you are probably going to get one regardless.
- Long Sleeve Bodysuits
Basic bodysuits suite everyone regardless of your stature. But in this case, for a petite women’s closet, a long sleeve bodysuit can make all the difference. If your height is in your legs and you have a shorter torso, a long sleeve bodysuit can elongate your torso for a more flattering look. As we all know, black is very slimming – but we also do recommend a neutral bodysuit such as beige, white, black, or any dark colors.
- Monochromatic
The benefits of going for a monochromatic outfit is that it looks super chic and high fashion, and it creates a lot of harmony so that you don’t look like you’re over the place. This is perfect for those who aren’t too bold with their outfits or have a difficult time styling. Finding the pieces that are within the same shade/color range can flatter you incredibly well!
