Art Meets Apartment: Pollock & Pillows

I should start by telling you that I live in a tiny apartment, as seems to be the plight of most young professionals living in the District and surrounding area. As such, my opportunities for exploring décor options are a bit limited, and I’m constantly trying to find ways to make my purchases multitask for me and also add color without overcrowding. One of my favorite ways to do that: pillows!

In the first installment of a new series, I give you a selection of décor selections paired up with artworks from an exhibit gracing DC at the moment, hope you enjoy!

Since seeing Caitlin Wilson‘s lovely pillow designs showcased by The Everygirl last week, I’ve been pining after accent pillows. Coincidentally, around the same time as I read this feature, I had the chance to meander through The Phillips Collection’s most recent  exhibit, “Angels, Demons, and Savages: Pollock, Ossario, Dubuffet.”

{With Pollock being one of my favorite modern artists, this was such a treat — I went to Phillips After 5, always a great time if you’re ever looking for Thursday plans.}

One of the things that struck me about Pollock’s works was the sheer amount of pop he was able to achieve — the graphic brushstrokes, the chaotic approach, the strong colors — and I think this approach is definitely one I’m drawn to when it comes to décor as well. That one pop of color can make all the difference, don’t you think?

What’s your favorite way to add color to a small space? Any suggestions for me?

What’s your favorite exhibit on display in your city at the moment?

  2. I really want to see this exhibit and I haven’t been to Phillips after 5 in years, great reminder! Love the brushstroke and graphic pillows too!
